These are essential fatty acids that the body does not make on its own. So, we have to get them from our food or from supplements. They are found in foods like nuts, seeds, eggs and seafood. Omega 6 controls the inflammatory response and tells the body how to react, for example, when you cut yourself. Omega 3 controls cell signaling and gene expression. It is anti-inflammatory and tells the body when to stop the inflammatory response. Science says our omega 6:3 ratio should be 3:1 to lower. Most Americans are testing higher than 25:1....as you can see, I did.
We love convenience, therefore many people are eating too much fast food and too much processed and packaged food. The poor diets of American's are driving health care costs to $50 billion per year and the studies say this is in part due to too little omega 3 and too much omega 6. Poor diet also influences the risk of disease.
We need omega 6 but the problem is that we are getting too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3. This is causing an imbalance in our 6:3 ratio and this is leading to several health issues. The main source of excess omega 6 is coming from vegetable oils and seed oils that are in fried, processed and packaged foods.
When there is too much omega 6 in the body, the cell walls start to harden and become less fluid. The cells do not absorb the nutrients from our food like they used to and toxins are not being released from the cells. Because omega 6 is pro-inflammatory, the inflammatory response is being triggered but we are not consuming enough omega 3 to tell the cells to stop that response and the body is turning on itself by attacking healthy tissues that it shouldn't. This is when people start to experience arthritis, cardiovascular disease, neuro-degenerative diseases, and so on.
We need omega 3 to balance out the ratio and park in the receptor sites of the cell wall membrane so that the cells can absorb nutrients and the body can function properly. Scientific research is saying we should be at a 3:1 ratio, while some nutrition trainings say 2:1 is optimal. That means three or two omega 6 to every one omega 3. I am seeing test results from 10:1 and as high as 84:1. Increased omega 3 levels benefit the brain, eyes, heart, joints, skin and immune system. Thousands of studies have been done and reported on the National Institutes of Health website. Low levels of omega 3 are associated with ADHA, autism, Alzheimer's, dementia, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, macular degeneration, and some cancers.
This comes in the form of ALA, or alpha-linolenic acid. It is a shorter chain fatty acid containing 18 carbons. The body actually uses EPA, 20 carbon chain, and DHA, 22 carbon chain, fatty acids. In order for the brain and body to use the ALA, it must do a biochemical conversion to add 2 or 4 carbons to the short chain for it to be converted to EPA and DHA that we actually need to build and repair cells. Surprisingly, that process is only 3-5% successful. This is very important to know for plant-based eaters.
We spend a lot of money on supplements and many times don't even know if they are working. Some people eating a healthy diet do not need them. However, many of us are not eating in a way that is optimal for the body, so supplementation is a great option. It gives the body the boost it needs to start moving in the right direction. I am finding that even people who think they have a healthy diet are still testing out of balance. There are some supplements that I trust, which are backed by science and proven to be effective. If you're like me and don't like wasting money, please contact me. I can help you determine if you need any supplementation at all and share with you the ones I recommend.
